How to Add Captions to Instagram Stories on iPhone

By the iPhone Captions editorial team · Updated 2026-06-28

Stories are tap-through and often muted, so captions keep people watching to the end. On iPhone, use Instagram's Captions sticker for speed, or caption in an app first for a custom look you control.

How do I add captions to an Instagram Story?

In the Story editor, tap the sticker icon and choose the Captions sticker — Instagram transcribes your audio so you can edit and style the text. For a branded look, word-by-word animation, or a captioned clip you can reuse, caption in an app like Subly first, then add it to your Story.

Option 1 — the Captions sticker

  1. Add your clip to a Story. Record or upload, then open the editing screen.
  2. Tap the sticker icon. It's at the top of the editor.
  3. Choose the Captions sticker. Instagram auto-transcribes the audio.
  4. Edit and style. Fix wrong words, pick a text style and color, and reposition.

Free and quick, but lightly styled and only inside Instagram.

Option 2 — caption first for a custom look

Caption the clip in an app for your own fonts, colors and word-by-word animation, then add the finished video to your Story. The same file also works for Reels, TikTok and Shorts.

Keep captions in the safe area — clear of the top profile row and the bottom reply bar, which cover text.

Frequently asked questions

Does Instagram caption Stories automatically?
Yes — the Captions sticker auto-transcribes your audio. Add it from the sticker tray in the Story editor, then correct any errors.
Why are my Story captions cut off?
They're probably under the UI. Keep text within the safe area, away from the top bar and the bottom reply field.
Can I reuse Story captions on Reels?
The sticker captions stay in Instagram. To reuse, caption in an app and burn the text in, then post the same file anywhere.
